Studying space whales... is that even possible?

In this special series produced by Arctus—made possible through funding from the Canadian Space Agency, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Transport Canada—Balad’EAU takes you into SPACE!

You’ll get to see our blue planet from a whole new perspective and explore how we can understand and protect Canadian whales using satellite data and other innovative technologies.

SMARTwhales: When Space Comes to the Whales' Rescue

[IN FRENCH ONLY] In this first episode, we discuss the genesis of that most surprising idea: that one day, we could study whales from space using satellite data. What led the Canadian Space Agency to join forces with other departments like Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada, calling upon the field's top experts to innovate and better understand these whales we are trying to protect? What kind of tools can we expect to see? And will they be useful for coastal communities?

[IN FRENCH ONLY] What do we see when we look at our planet from space? Blue... Just blue? No. All sorts of colors, actually. The color of the water allows us to understand how our ecosystems function and tells us whether our oceans are healthy. But to truly see the color of our oceans, we have to head back up into space and observe the Earth via satellite.

[IN FRENCH ONLY] In this final episode, we come back down to Earth to talk with the people who put the puzzle pieces together and successfully model where whales might be found. How do we translate satellite information into data that helps us understand whales and predict their presence around us? Modeling might sound intimidating, given the computers and complex calculations these experts deploy, but rest assured—you can simply think of it as a modern-day crystal ball.
